Karina Novikova
13 years ago, while still at the secondary school, I’ve directed my first musical.
Then went on to study philosophy at Vilnius University and only because becoming an artist wasn’t a valid career choice in my family.
Got a job as an usher at Vilnius National Opera House and spent my days observing Robert Wilson directing J.S. Bach “St. John Passion”.
After a year left for Klaipeda to study directing and opera singing.
My debut was at Klaipeda state music theater where I directed H. Purcell opera “Dido & Aeneas”.
Being restless 23 year old, I’ve established multiple collaborations in Lithuania and UK, what enabled me to stage such masterpieces as A. Strindberg “Miss Julie”, or E. Ionesco “Exit the King”.
In 2016 I’ve decided to concentrate only on the opera productions.
My assisting credits includes working on W.A. Mozart “Don Giovanni” at Opera Holland Park, London, G. Puccini “La Bohème” at Knighton opera, Leicester.
I’ve attended a short course in London, where such prominent directors as Annabel Arden, John Copley, Martin Duncan, Elijah Moshinsky, Orpha Phelan where sharing their experience.
To learn, how important opera houses in Europe work, I did few internships at Dutch National Opera, Zurich Opera house and Komische Oper, Berlin.
In 2017 I had a pleasant invitation to come to Vilnius and stage the first German opera “Pastorello Musicale”.
Last summer I’ve founded a project for a young opera singers in Lithuania. The goal is to share my experience of working with best opera directors. Next year Opera Accelerator will become international.
Now I’m still at the Komische Oper, Berlin and looking forward for Barrie Koskie’s “Candide” opening night.
Next spring I’m coming back to Berlin for an independent opera project (will be able to tell more about it soon).
And the summer will start in Zurich, where I will be able to come back to A. Homoki's opera world.
